The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open at Heritage Resorts is certainly the most exceptional golfing event to have taken place in Mauritius since the sport was introduced to the island 170 years ago.

Golf is introduced into Mauritius, the fourth country in the world after Scotland, England and India.
Mention is made in a golfing encyclopaedia of a competition on the Gymkhana golf course, created by British Royal Navy officers.

The Mauritius Military Gymkhana Club
is officially founded.

First edition of the
Ireland Cup, one of the island’s oldest golfing competitions, which has since been held annually at the Gymkhana.
The Royal Navy hands over the running of the Mauritius Naval and Military Gymkhana Club to civilian members.
The island’s second championship course is created at the Paradis Golf Club on the Morne Peninsula.
The first edition of the Mauritius Golf Open, renamed the Mauritius Commercial Bank Open in 2009, takes place and is included in the European Seniors Tour.
Towards the end of the year, the first nine holes are opened for play at the Golf du Château course, now the Heritage Golf Club. The full course was completed in March 2005;
it is set in the grounds of the Domaine de Bel Ombre.
The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open is held in May at Heritage Resorts, coinciding with the Heritage Golf Club’s tenth anniversary.
